In Pleasant Grove, Alabama, a 28 yr old black single mother, Marshae Jones, has been charged with manslaughter in connection with an altercation that occurred between her and another young black female nearly 5 months ago; when Jones was pregnant.
Jones is alleged to have started the altercation that led to the shooting death of her 5 month old unborn child. The charges stem not only from the allegations that Jones’ provoked the fight that led to the shooting, but also that she failed to remove herself and her unborn child from danger.
So why was Jones shot? There is no official motive on record. But authorities have stated that the reason was none other than KCID! (spell it backwards)
Allegedly, Jones and the shooter, 23 yr old Ebony Jemison were fighting in a Dollar General parking lot over the father of the child. While Jemison was initially charged in the shooting, she was later released when the Grand Jury failed to indict her for the shooting. Jemison’s conduct was apparently seen as an act of self defense.
Jones was released from the Jefferson County Jail on Thursday after posting a $50,000 bond. Sources have quoted Lt. Danny Reid of the Pleasant Grove Police Department as saying that:
“The only victim of the shooting was the unborn child.”
The Jones indictment takes places in the aftermath of Alabama’s new anti-abortion bill recently signed by the Governor that criminalizes abortions at virtually every stage of fetus development. The bill challenges Roe v. Wade’s recognition of a woman’s constitutional right to end a pregnancy.
Abortion rights groups such as the National Abortion Federation have weighed in on the Jones case, citing disparate treatment of Jones due to her race as well as the criminalization of pregnancy of women of color. However, there are other cases on record where women have been criminally charged for unlawful conduct that resulted in the death of a fetus.
Jones is presently being assisted by the Yellowhammer Fund, a pro choice organization that helped her make bail and is now providing her with an attorney.
